  10. The focal point of the Working Group continues to be wide-area NFS,
  11. i.e., NFS-across-the-Internet.  Particular concerns fall into two areas:
  12. congestion control and authentication/authorization.
  13.  
  14. Regarding the former, the consensus is that real progress on congestion
  15. control for NFS lies in the hands of vendors, not in those of Internet
  16. researchers and engineers.  Furthermore, many attendees doubt whether
  17. the Working Group can do much to influence vendors to address problems
  18. that are long-standing and well-known.
  19.  
  20. Along these lines, the following questions were raised:

  23.    o Can NFS' congestion handling be fixed?
  24.    o Could Sun fix it?
  25.    o Could the IETF fix it without Sun's cooperation?
  26.    o Is it legitimate to focus solely on Sun/RPC?
  27.    o Would Sun work with the IETF? Should we care?
  28.    o What role does AFS play?  Or the Guelph NFS on TCP?

  31. The answers to these questions are not entirely obvious.  Nevertheless,
  32. the Working Group is proceeding to document the shortcomings in
  33. NFS/RPC/UDP as they affect good Internet-citizenship.
  34.  
  35. The Working Group urges backbone and regional network administrators to
  36. monitor the ports used by NFS (principally UDP/2049) when gathering
  37. network usage statistics; in this way, the IETF can gauge the severity
  38. of the wide-area NFS problem.
  39.  
  40. Regarding authentication and authorization, the DFS Working Group deems
  41. it appropriate to delegate such issues to the Working Groups dedicated
  42. to these areas.  The DFS Working Group will enumerate its special
  43. concerns and bring them to the attention of the appropriate security
  44. Working Groups at the next IETF meeting.
